The Urban Poor of Manila…

What life really is for a fifth of Metro Manila’s population. Is the Conditional Cash Transfer program of the current administration really benefitting the urban poor? Or is it just being transferred to the pockets of those people called the “honorables”?

      1. Perhaps, It’s due to passiveness of government and also surrounding people. I kept asking myself, am i one of them? Poverty is complicated and can’t be solved by one person only. People and government should work side by side to eradicate this issue.

      2. Yup, you’re absolutely correct. But often, those in the government seemed not “really” interested in addressing poverty. They are more interested in returning favors to their campaign donors. 😦

  1. I’ve better NOT say my thoughts about churches … Konstantins “uniting’ at the council in Nicea 325 AD was about politics and his own power, not about religion and God … Though it may have seen so…

      1. Yes! Simply speaking. And he also decided what should be gathered in the Bible. F.ex. excluded everything about reincarnation and making sure everything was pointed at people must do as they are told otherwise they’ll end up in hell. Also simply speaking. By the way, in means – don’t think for yourself, don’t question anything.
Thanks to the fact I stopped trying to be a good christian – I just felt bad about it – I found my spirituality.

      2. As before, you said it right ninna. There were so many “texts” which were not included in the set of books (now known as the bible) which Constantine’s team decided for themselves. I think they selected the books that supported their ideas before and treated those that contradicted their thoughts as “apocryphal”. Although the authenticity of what they compiled was also questionable up to this day.

      1. What I noticed when I was in he Philippines were kids , kids, kids, playing on the streets. I’ve heard good things about the Philippines, how the economy is picking up, and with GDP even higher than the US and all of SEA, including China. 7% But whatever prosperity the country is enjoying now, it’s not trickling down to the poor. However, there’s nothing any government can do to alleviate poverty, especially in the cities. Manila and vicinity are densely occupied, but people from the rural areas keep on coming. Most of them are professional squatters , who for he most part, are relocated and given housing, however humble they maybe, but they sell off their rights to housing, and go back to the city to squat.

What is wrong is the run away birth rate, and you’re right, the poorer they are, the more kids they have.

      2. I hope I’ll not offend anyone but the religion here in the Philippines “promotes” high birth rate and even encourages, to a certain extent, poverty as a way to be near to god. I’m not sure if that’s one of the “brainwashing” resulting to high population and “bahala na ang maykapal” (leave it to the lord god) attitude. We have a reproduction health bill which provides birth control education but the church is against it. Just saying my thoughts…

      1. But sometimes it is their fault…. I know you know what I mean. Like they don’t want to study in school, instead of spending their money right, they went into drugs, etc., etc., etc.

      2. I’m talking in africa and no it isn’t their fault. They turn to drugs for a reason mostly trauma in their past. Most countries keep the status quo. The government can eradicate poverty…they just don’t want to. It has been proven in the USA

      3. Africa is a different matter… It is sad that such a continent is being left out “untreated”. And you’re right, the government needs poor people and the uneducated as “slave voters”…

  2. No Like button. This is very sad and an international problem with no realistic solutions. My view is that the problems in each country begin at the very top where out of control personal greed and general corruption are rampant. Our US federal government is a fine example.

      1. Both our parties, Republican and Democrat are corrupt. One claims to be more conservative than the other, whatever. What we need is a true Conservative party like Canada has. Politically speaking, I am extreme Right Wing Conservative and am fed up with the chit slinging from either side. They are all a bunch of self-serving liars.
